Looking for a road bike to ride about once a week at the weekends and maybe do some club racing in case I enjoy it.

Would be nice to get the best frame for that so that parts may be upgraded as they fail/wear out.

Would like to spend around $3k.

Ideas ?

Most bikes around $3000 are going to be very similar in spec, and are all pretty good. Excellent bang for buck around this price.

In my opinion, its more important to choose a good bike shop. Find a shop that will take the time to fit you correctly, and take care of any initial mechanical issues you may have. Find a shop that asks you what you want the bike for, and not what you want to spend. Have a look around, find a shop that treats you right, and buy what they recommend. Can't go wrong!

Good luck.

I know where to get a bike for less then 3 grand with Dura-ace, Columbus Al frame and it even has some carbon too.

I would make sure the minimum gruppo is Ultegra, the 105 derailer is not that good, chain slips too easily when hill climbing.

Looking at bikeexchange.com, you can see equipment level varies even when the price is the same.

An Argon 18 with 105 in Adelaide, is the same price as one with Ultegra in Melbourne.

Just spent less than 3 on a Pinarello FP2. Full carbon with campy veloce, that included shoes, pedals, helmet, cages, saddlebag, tube etc. I'm really happy with it. Rode a Crx4 for a year before getting this and the difference is amazing. I put on 500ks in the first fortnight, I love it so much.

I'll just add that the guys at Mike Turturs were great, I might have brought a different bike, but in the end chose the bikeshop and then chose the bike. Great fit, great deal, great service. I had to take the bike back because of a fault (not theirs, i was the lucky one in a million with a freehub that died) they fixed it in moments with good humour, courtesy and an appropriate level of concern.

I second David's comments, bought the same bike, from the same shop, but spent $3600. Mine has the Campy Centaur groupo and carried over my Ksyrium SL's from my old bike which made the bike even better than standard. The guys at Mike Turtur's were absolutely fantastic, had been there before with my old Cannondale, for servicing etc.. but wouldn't consider another shop. One thing to note, make sure the geometry of the frame suits you, you can upgrade a groupset at any stage but if the frame isn't right for you then that's soemthing you can't really upgrade!
