For the Old Freeway to Mt. Lofty Hill Climb can anyone tell me which way the route goes after you get past the bollards & the disused road.
Do you head down to Mount Loft Summit Road straight away or do you cut through on Shurdington Road & then onto Mount Loft Summit Road? Cheers

Also is it possible to put up the routes on the climbs as a map like there is for Norton Summit climb?

Mal, I always thought it was head straight down to the Summit Road, but it has been a few years since I rode in SA...

Cheers,

definitely shurdington mate. the less time you spend on mt lofy scenic route (scenic drivers/race drivers) the better... quite nice going past a couple of the houses up there as well.

I'm not sure what the "official" route is for the purpose of timed hillclimbs, but I much prefer the Shurdington Rd option.

RE: Collins Rd to Ashton. I think this road contains a reasonable section of unsealed surface, so roadies beware

Shurdington is definitely the much easier option if you want to make up lost time

Once you're on Shurdington, turn left up Blackburn Drive - nice little "killer" hill there, then right at the end and you'll end up on Summit Rd (with only a little more climbing to go).

seated is the slow way, don't be afraid to stand on the pedals.

after all it is only for a short distance and the hill is 15%

watch the fast climbers like Shleck, Sastre - see how long they stay seated for !

I only used to remain seated on it for a bit of fun, and to feel the burn in the top of the quads. 99% of the time, I got out of the saddle. It was a suggestion.

Everyone may have a preferred option...but surely every hill climb on C2M has the required route?

I would have thought it was down to Summit Road and then up.

Can anyone clarifiy this?

Seated at only a mere 15% ??

I assume you mean in the big ring.

Due to the fact it is a hill climb and not a hill ups and down, I go via Shurdington. Most other riders I have gone with in the past go this way. Why go down to the Mt Lofty Scenic Route??? when you can keep climbing. and yes I know there is a few down spots in other spots on the way but these others can not be avoided.

Actually I will do a backtrack on this and now go via Blackburn.

After Lil Italy, Sheoak Rd rides, this now feels like a flat piece of road.

But definetly standing with 39-21 gears.

To the fellow cyclist I nearly crashed into on Sunday 10/01/10 as you were climbing the Old Freeway bike path about 7:30AM... Apologies for swearing at you but the fact is, it's a two way path and if I'm coming down (cautiously - not particularly fast) I shouldn't come around a corner and find you on my side of the track... Locking up the back wheel at speed to avoid a crash tends to make one involuntarily swear!

The path's thin enough as it is, ride single file and stay on your own side...

Fair enough too!!!

I thought the cycling community was respectful enough to look out for each other and it was only the idiots in cars we needed to be wary of. It looks as though some cyclists need to learn their left from right... and quickly before they hurt someone.

Went up the Old Freeway to Mt Lofty Summit on Wednesday on my trike. Slow and steady (no standing here) and a bit of debris removal: dirty nappy (!), broken bottle and a dead snake). Overtaken by plenty and overtook none! Continued from the Summit to Greenhill Road, back across to Ashton via Wood Hill Rd, around to Montacute via Marble Hill Road and down to the burbs. A lovely ride if a little bit of a shock for the first hill climb on the trike for this overweight rider.

Just take it easy if you aren't fit yet! We don't want to be finding you as the next piece of trackside debris up there.
