I have become very philosophical over the years in regards to drug use. The way I see it, it is only cheating if you take something that no one else has and is against the general direction the sport wants to go.It seems that drugs have been around for ever in cycling. For example, in the 60's the drug of choice was amphetamines, in the 80s it was steroids (remember Ben Johnson the sprinter?!). In the 1990s to 2000s it was EPO. If I really want to be cynical I'd say that Lance probably introduced his US Postal team mates to EPO after seeing it's benefits during his cancer rehab ( which he admitted using in his book). It seems both logical and plausible. Now, it seems, the sport wants to clean it's tainted image so any form of drug taking I would view as cheating as it is going against the direction the sport wants to take.
As for Australans taking drugs and in particular Cadel. Well, logic dictates that he may have taken drugs at some point in his career. I'd be surprised if he any drugs now as just watching him race he is riding like a human with guts, determination and suffering. Back in the late 80s, when I used to race, I have my suspicions about systematic doping in the AIS squads and I suspect the riders never knew anything about it. I will elaborate. It was commonly known that the AIS riders took "vitamins" via syringes. Add to this that the road squad had an East German coach (why bring in an eastern block coach if not to learn how to do systematic doping as this was their speciality), a lot of money being spent on AIS programs and the need to deliver Gold medals, and it all adds up to a well organised doping program. And, as I have stated earlier, I believe the riders thought they were getting vitamins not drugs.
Idealistically I hate drug use as it negates natural ability, probably shortens your life and isn't great for the sport and especially the young kids but logically I see why guys would take them to be on a level playing field...

It is really a tragedy, because the fact is, he does a lot of good. Has done wonders for the sport, for cancer and is a wonderful mentor. So, should taking performance enhancing drugs eradicate all the good?

One point which I think was very interesting, and changed my thinking a bit, was the comment that if Tyler had stolen the yellow jersey from someone else, chances are that they didn't deserve the jersey either.

Now, if you tell me Cadel Evans takes drugs - I'll shoot myself....it's just not the Aussie thing to do!

He may be telling the truth but I guess the only way we'll know for sure is if someone can confirm, without doubt, that Lance Armstrong returned a positive doping test. Until then it's all his word against others.

It's a shame for cycling that these doping incidents seem to take so so long to resolve, as with the Contador case. Why can't they (i.e. UCI, WADA etc) just make a decision based on the evidence; that is, in both Armstrong's and Contador's cases, is there proof that they doped. You would have to say "yes" for Contador as he did return a positive blood test, and a tentative "no" to Armstrong as, far as I know, he's never officially tested positive.
