Having just got my bike back from another service at my preferred store, I have to say I am once again thoroughly disappointed. Without having a whinge about the issues I have faced and without going into naming the store in question, I have decided to vote with my feet and look for a decent service centre that will do the job properly the first time and provide some good honest service.
So I would like to ask the forum members here, who do you recommend for a good bike service in Adelaide??

I always found MegaBike at Hyde park to be pretty good as well as Standish Cycles Unley
what sort of service did you have done? just a minor service or a big service?

When I bought the bike (16 weeks ago) I had an initial issue with gears slipping (had obviously not been checked properly). Had a chain break and took it in to get fixed as I had a temp link in it and asked them to remove temp link and get it back to normal. Didn't happen as I discovered when got bike home (my fault I guess for not checking their work at the shop-but should I have too??). Also had another chain break this week, went in for repair and they have tightened the new chain too tight meaning that it is slipping gears at the chain connection link meaning I need to take it in for another fix.

Don't want to get into a bagging session on the shop (actually I do, but refraining on it :-) ). Just after some good advice on who is good in Adelaide at the moment and who I will look to for some serive and any other business I can throw thewir way....At the moment, Hyde Park is winning :-)

I can't speak from personal experience, since I maintain my own bikes, but a number of acquaintances who are above that sort of thing hold Peter at BMC in high regard :-)

I live by the motto "service is everything" Developing a rapport which your favorite bike shop owner is important as it will tell you alot about the business. Find someone who has a passion for the bicycle and even better is if you find someone who is passionate about your particular brand of bike. A noticeable suggestion for anyone wanting a good service is to clean your bike before you let the local mechanic loose on it as he/she will need to spend much less time cleaning it to find the adjustment screws and more time on getting your bike just right Personally I like to have a go myself with the bike maintainance as I have done when I was a kid and like to buy a few parts on ebay (which can be risky too), but nothing is as good as the relationship you share with your favorite bike shop owner. I have several bike shops I like to go to as each one stocks different brands of particular items and I will purchase from different shops according to what I need at the time. Overall a bike is still cheaper than a car (which is a bottomless money pit).

Troy, I think good service is everything as well but I'd be encouraged to name the shop so they know who they are and can maybe lift their game. I bought my bike from a shop in the city, a rather large one with the initials BE and had problems with the FD from day one. I took the bike in for the free 6 week service and mentioned the sticking FD and they said they'd fix it. I picked up the bike and they confirmed they'd fixed the issue but I didn't check the bike before taking it home. On my first ride I found out the issue hadn't been fixed at all. I now have to take it back again. I find that very annoying and has lowered my opinion of the place just with this simple matter. Why tell me it's fixed when it's not?!

Go see Steve at Corsa Cycles 182 Gouger St. These guy's are the only ones in town that totaly strip your bike right down without being asked. They are the best I have ever been to. They own the shop, (the mechanics that is) so their reputation is on the line, unlike other shops where the mech's are hired hands.

Redlad, sounds like same issues as me from the same place. Could add in another story of my mate being talked out of a bike that he wanted by the sales person and ending up buying from somewhere else! Lol.

A good bike shop will let you wear your cleats in their shop.....(this sounds familiar on another post somewhere....)

Going by what I've heard from a few sources now (and considering I live in Gilbert Street) I might have to pay Corsa Cycles a visit... Don't think I'll bother with BE for servicing from now on as their 6 week service seems to have consisted of pumping up my tyres for me and handing it back. I can do that at home!

I agree. Peter does a fantastic job with all of his services and Lia is always prepared to help. They are in the city on Wright St.
I have no interest in the business, but I do highly recommend. www.bmcr.com.au

I bought my bike from BE, and have had some minor services there, and have had no problems. But when i want a big service i go to International Cycles on Payneham road- the best place for servicing.

Peter Giessauf at International Cycles Stepney is excellent, phone number is 83622609. Small shop, personal service, excellent mechanic. I must go past half a dozen or more bike shops just to get to him!

for getting fitted up: steve at corsa cycles. (im a fan of their cleat aligning machine..)
for wheelbuilding & mechanics: andrew field at bicycle express, steve and michele at corsa cycles, kim at north adelaide cycles.
for training tips and racing advice and all round nice guy service: steve at corsa, kim at north adelaide cycles. allan gill at super elliots.
for range and price and test riding ability: bicycle express.
i worked at bicycle express for a few years. loved it. only problem with a large shop is that when more than 1 person is dealing with your bike, then communication can sometimes get affected. i dont know any other shop in adelaide that has given cash refunds on bikes from unhappy customers.
i truly feel that if we aint happy with something, we must take it back immediately. i ALWAYS take my bike for a test ride when i leave the shop. ALWAYS. it helps the mechanics know if they got it right. cos if we dont take it back on the spot, then mechanics dont learn. we gotta help those that help us.
and if we like the job that was done, lets find out who did it and give em some feedback. take the bike back to the shop next time it needs work and request that mechanic do the job cos you were happy last time. even meet the mechanic in person and tell em you like the service and thats why your back. a genuine compliment like that helps us keep our standards high on our craftwork.
the quality of our life is the quality of our communication...so lets communicate with our mechanics.

Add another recommendation for Steve and Michele at Corsa Cycle centre. I got a great fit there which knocked a minute off my time up NS, and last october before I went over to ATB in Melbourne, Michele took my bike in that day after I phoned in the morning. I waited while he trued the front wheel, stripped out and fixed the headset which was slipping, checked and straightened the rear derailleur hanger and tuned the gears, while simultaneous serving the customers that came in. Took him about 45 minutes with interuptions and sum total charged - $30, bargain and I will never take a bike anywhere else again. They were off to Melbourne the next day to work as neutral support for the Jayco Suntour but he managed to squeeze me in. I reckon if they are good enough to work for those guys, they are good enough to work on my bike.
