best = Norton. Safe, decent gradient, and versatile worst = That deadend road at the back of Montacute which you have to descend and then u-turn to climb back up... steep, dead and for no reason. toughest = sheoak scenic = fox ck

Old Willunga is good for the view so are parts of Greenhill Rd... Can't say I've ridden every hill in Adelaide but the toughest two I have been up are probably Checker Hill and Corkscrew Rd...
Coming home from a ride via Snake Gully (One Tree Hill Rd into the back of Golden Grove) is pretty tough too, particularly after a long ride.. edited by JDL on 4/08/2009

Montacute - Hard Woodland Way (parallel to Norton's) - Ridiculously steep Aldgate Valley Road - Brilliant in both directions Norton's - Always a winner Old freeway - good longer climb

Yep agree with Andrew M, Mt Osmond from the Beaumont side isn't the longest but certainly pinches.

It seems that I do a lot of hills once… Fox Creek Rd, Checker Hill, Anstey Hill, Greenhill Rd, Torrens Hill Rd, Corkscrew Rd, Belair Rd, Mt Barker Rd, Montacute Rd, The Grove Way
I found Menglers Hill pretty tough after 100k's during the '09 Community Challenge
The only hills I ride often are Gorge Rd and Norton Summit Rd edited by Paul A Smith on 5/08/2009 edited by Paul A Smith on 5/08/2009

Its a little out of town but the climb out of Sedan heading back to Mt Pleasant is pretty good, I think that I know every inch of Norton Summit but enjoy it everytime (almost never any traffic on it early in morning), Woodland Way is short but tough, as is Blackburn Drive in Crafers (just off Shurdington Drive on way to Mt Lofty summit), Greenhill Rd is best of "longer" climbs (for Adelaide anyway) but road surface is pretty crappy and a bit of traffic about, good long climb up Upper Sturt Rd all the way but traffic is terrible, Aldgate Valley Rd - heaven on earth!, haven't yet ventured down there but they tell me "Little Italy" is pretty good (scenic and good climbing), Checker Hill is closest I've come to getting off!

Thanks to the guys who suggested Woodland Way, never knew about it and it looks like a good challenge.. Will give is a try.. Can you tell me though, is it bitumen all the way through back onto Norton Summit Rd at the top (via Teringie Drive I guess)? Fell for that trap before, following a great road/climb only for it to turn into dirt....
Also what are the thoughts on Torrens Hill Rd (between Gorge Rd and Paracombe), any good? I'm surprised I've never done it as it's a good way to get back across from Gorge Rd etc to the North Eastern suburbs where I live... I think the turn-off to it off of Gorge Rd has always looked a little too steep after a long ride! Weak, I know..

Yes, Woodland Way/Teringie Drive is bitumen all the way.
The beginning of Torrens Hill Rd from Gorge Rd is very very steep, but not too bad after that.

If you're travelling south and want to climb, Chandler's Hill Rd, Education Rd, Bains Rd and Cox Hill Rd all head up the same ridge and offer varying lengths (2-3km) and challenges. Oakridge Rd is fun too - make sure you take the left turn at Homestead Dr and go all the way to the top. It gets steeper the further it goes until it reaches 18%+. Has anyone ever ridden My Alma Rd? It's near Inman Valley and it's ridiculous. It has several sections with each one harder than the last it seems and you have to ride all the way until it turns into dirt after the summit (so you know when you've arrived) which makes it not well travelled. I've only ever done it on my MTB but I've ridden Sheoak and Mt Alma is at least as steep and much longer - and the road surface is much better. Toughest hill I've seen in SA. Must have a crack on my Roadie sometime. edited by Matt Sarre on 6/08/2009

I'd like to nominate Greenhill Rd in two categories:
Toughness - not because it's particularly steep, but it just keeps going and going at an even gradient without any respite. I find that more of a mental challenge than, say, the old expressway.
Scenic - really nice views of Adelaide on the way down. But don't look at them for too long :-)

I'd like to nominate Greenhill Road as well for the same reason given by Michael...it just keeps going and going and going with stretches of 8-9% at points that go for a km in length. Certainly one for the mental toughness. Obviously it's no Mont Ventoux but it's tough enough for weekend warriors!
Having now done Fox Creek for a second time, I now think this is a really nice climb...quite scenic...and a good short challenge. Forest Range and Ashton are nice steady climbs and not too tough.
Old Freeway is nice and a decent distance to make it a challenge, but usually quite busy. edited by Redlad on 2/09/2009

If you want to head further south try the loop from Port Elliot up Crows Nest Lookout, over the top to Pambula Rd then Pambula Rd to Hindmarsh Valley Rd then down Nettle Hill ( Very Steep ) along Sawpit RD then into Victor Harbor and from Victor Back to Port Elliot along Scenic bike track.
Get the best of Hills views on way out and coast views on way back in !

Michael, Yeah I agree with Greenhill Road. Nice 7.3 km of climbing up to bus stop 19. Lots of people fear it because of traffic (only risky if you have cars coming past you from both ways at the same time). It is particularly good for a training ride due to its length. I usually ride it really well for the first 2.5 km then die a slow painful death Always makes you stronger if you persist all the way. Havent cracked a sub 30 yet but come close numerous times. The other ride mentioned by JDL re: Torrens Hill Road is a bit insane but only 1.1 km so most people should be able to grit their teeth for the grind up, however it is a fairly straight climb so can be a bit boring. The climb for mental toughness easily goes to the Corkscrew - sometimes you are left wondering there aint no gear low enough.....everybody whinges about it, and havent met anyone enjoying it Havent even found any climb here in Indonesia that compares (no car here would be able to climb such a hill here in Indonesia as most are underpowered - hence the roads if not washed out are good for bike hill climbs).
