i have a specialised roubaix comp 04/05 model which has recently started taking water in bad weather, even if not raining it is getting in when riding wet roads. and not just a little, enough to make a swishing sound and i estimate about equivalent of half a water bottle from a 1 hour ride in heavy rain - i have been draining via seat post removal and had the bb out once to dry out properly (cant be doing that any good! - i can find no obvious entry point(s) anybody experiencing similar? what is a likely remedy?

Hi Dean
You might find that the water is actually entering your frame via the seatpost tube i.e. water coming off back wheel hits the post and runs down into the frame. I'd take the seat post out and give it and the inside of the frame a good clean so that you minimize any gap when the clamp is done up. This might help, as might a well placed piece of tape or some grease. Also a long shot, but I have seen people put thier seats up beyond what the seatpost is designed for which leaves a gap at the bottom of the clamping slot. Not a good thing to do, but like I said. I've seen it, particularly on compact frames. All the best

are you sure you are riding a bike and not a boat?

Dean, If you are careful about it you can drill a small hole in the underside of the bottom bracket. I've seen this done on a few frames for the same reason without any problems (carbon and alloy frames).

Dean, In all the frames I've had I make sure there is a drain hole on the bottom side of the BB, yes, I drill a hole next to the BB cable guide. Most carbon frames have the BB's sealed from the seat & down tubes, so it's unusual? Plus each tube (seat, down, & chain stays) should have a tiny drain hole at it's base, chech that they are there & not blocked.
If you wish to drill, remove the BB first! Drill it (3.5 - 4mm diameter bit) & clean out any swarf thoroughly before assembly.
(Note: it's impossible to stop water getting in, just make sure it drains......)
Hope that helps

thanks for all the advice - thinking i will try the seat stem seal before i drill any holes in the frame - seat stem certainly seems the most likely candidate for letting water in (given that is where it seems to throw up to from the back wheel on wet rides) but still surprised at how much is getting in - mates are calling my bike "the submarine" - will pull the bb out again and dry out the frame totally before the seal job.
just for interest JT CYCLES who sold me the bike in 05 had never heard of a similar problem!!
