I have been doing a bit of hills training lately and I want to know which is best for training.
Is it better to find the steepest hill (8-12%) and do repeats on that? Or is it better to do repeats on a lesser gradiant (4-8%)?

Although it's possible to achieve the same intensity of workout on steep or shallow climbs , personally i find that the less steep ones are better. Basically because on a climb of around 4 to 6 percent it's easier to adjust your intensity / speed according to how you feel & there's less chance of going into the red & not being able to recover properly . Obviously you can slow down on a 10 % slope if you want ( given low enough gearing ) but riding at 8kmh while trying to recover enough to pick it up to 10kmh again is just a bit too much like turbo training in my experience ! Of course , if your actaully training for riding up something like the Mortirolo , then it's probably best to get used to lots of pain & little speed :-)

Doing repeats on a hill of steeper gradient will predominantly increase your strength. When doing repeats on a hill of shallow gradient you'll be more inclined to spin and this will enhance your aerobic power. It all depends on what you feel is more beneficial to you at the stage that you're at in your cycling.
