Hi all, I have had this question in my head for a while now and so I'm going to ask it here. Which is the hardest hill ride in Adelaide? I'm thinking the toughest climb in terms of gradient and length. My initial thought was Greenhill Rd. to Mt. Lofty Summit, but I am prepared to be challenged on this. What do you think?

Checker hill near Kersbrook is a lung buster, as is Corkscrew, but closer to town, either Coach house drive or Cherry Gardens climbs are seriously tough.

Aha! Now I've had the exact same thought recently, so I teamed up with my Garmin 705 to go and find out. I still have one more that I haven't done, Sheoak Rd, but I still have a rough list. So here are my top 5 that I have done.
5: Montacute Road or Greenhill Road. Not because they are particularly steep, but they are long. 4: Corkscrew Rd 3: Checker Hill Rd 2: Coach Road, just off the top of The Parade. 1: Woodland Way/Coachhouse Drive. This is the winner because it has the massive gradients that you find on Checker & Coach road, but is 2.6km for the whole climb. Ouch... edited by James Raison on 28/04/2011

You better try Cherryville in behind Marble Hill, it's a little longer (0.5mile) than the CH pitch (12%) (0.3mile). Now I have only be riding for 5mths around here in the hills and Coachhouse is nothing to CV. On my 705 I got a grade of 26%. Coachhouse when you think about it is only a short pitch. I have all the data on the 705 and be glad to share it when I get time....There's a challenge...all 5/6 climbs in one day

Wow, Cherryville sounds horrendous. It's on the to-do list now.

1. Kensington Rd, from the roundabout to the lookout point is ~15% for 1km. It gets my vote for the toughest climb because there is no respite and it just gets harder. 2. Woodland Way/Coachhouse Drv. It flattens out to about 10% in some spots. Feels like you're going downhill. 3. Cherryville Rd/Fernhurst Rd is nasty and hard to get a rythmn but not as steep so I give that number 3. A great one for group rides because its a dead end and what goes down must come up
Sheoak Rd at Beliar is pretty similar in length and grade to Checker Hill. Not sure how to rate these. They are tough, but the pain is over quickly.

For me, Coachhouse Drv/Woodland Way is number 1. 4 ramps between 12-17% and then the last one when you are already knackered is 21%. I agree about Kensington Lookout, just doesn't let up. Mt Osmond from the Beaumont side is also pretty tough.

This website already gives the climbs a rating number, the higher the number the harder the climb.
Calculated as follows; (H/D*100)*4 + H2/D + D/1000 Whereby: H = difference in height (metres); D = distance in metres
This calculation results in the following climbs and their difficulty Cherryville/Fernhurst Rd ~ 73 Sheoak Rd ~ 72 Coachhouse Drive ~ 72 Checkerhill ~ 69 Mt Osmond (from Beaumont) ~ 67 Kensington Rd (from St Bernards Road) ~ 65 Greenhill Road ~ 63
I may have missed some as well.
As a comparison Alpe D'Huez rates a 131 edited by Paul A Smith on 5/05/2011
